Stepping into a pool of water is common enough, but who could ever imagine stepping into a pool of fish? In February of 1974, Bill Tapp, an Australian farmer, saw a rain of fish that covered his farm. How surprised he must have been when he heard many fish hitting against his roof!
What caused this strange occurrence? This is a question that had long puzzled people who study fish. The answer turned out to be a combination of wind and storm.
When it is spring in the northern part of the world, it is fall in Australia. Throughout the autumn season, terrible storms happen and rains flood the land. The strong winds sweep over Australia like huge vacuum cleaners(吸尘器), collecting seaweed, pieces of wood, and even schools of fish. Strong winds may carry these bits of nature for many miles before vacuum dropped them on fields, houses and astonished people.
Although they seem unusual, fish-falls occur quite frequently in Australia. When Bill Tapp was asked to describe the scene of fish, he remarked, “They look like millions of dead birds falling down.’’ His statement is not surprising. The wonders of the natural world are as common as rain. Nature, with its infinite wonders, can create waterfalls that flow upward and fish that fall out of the sky.

Ashley and Chris work in the same department designing postcards. Chris had a college degree in art and deeply felt that the degree of his designs was excellent. His last postcard showed the depth of a desert’s beauty and delights.
“It’s just a picture of the desert,” Ashley said, “Not deep at all.” “Some people desire seeing beauty,” Chris replied, “Mine delivers that”. Ashley laughed and said, “Well, that depends on what you think beauty is.”
Days later, someone delivered a letter to Ashley. The letter said, “You are worthy of the bad things that will come your way. You will know the taste of defeat, and I will destroy you.”
Ashley suddenly felt very cold. It was as if the room temperature had dropped 30 degrees. “Who would do such a terrible deed?” she wondered. "I will not let a simple letter defeat me.
Just then, Chris came into the room and offered Ashley a piece of his sandwich.
“Try some,” he smiled widely. “It’s delicious.”
“Are you trying to poison(毒) me?” Ashley asked. Chris’s reaction was delayed(延迟) from confusion. “What’s your problem?” he asked.
The next day, Ashley brought a bat to use to defend herself . When Chris saw her bat, he joked, “Defend and win one for the team.”
Ashley took no notice of him. She spent the whole day reading self-defending books and placed her work on delay. “You can’t delay your work. Our job demands us to do our work on time,” Chris said. "We must meet the demands of our job.”

To be sure, only children experienced some things differently from those with sisters and brothers. Many feel more pressure to succeed. They also tend to look only to their parents as role models in the absence(缺席) of brothers and sisters.
In India, 10-year-old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny minority(少数) of only children. Among other things, the group does volunteer work to counter (反对) the false idea that they are not responsible. “People think we’re treated too kindly and ruined,” says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. “But I'd like to remind them how lonely it can get.”
Most only children, however, say they wish for sisters or brothers only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain's David Emerson, co-author of the book The Only Child, says that such a person has to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience. After his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable (易受攻击的) to house breakers, to a new one with more safety. "The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it, "he says, "After all, I am left with that responsibility."
In the future, more and more only children will probably face similar choices. With working mothers increasing, many families are finding they simply don't have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that the charge made against them is unfair.
67. It can be inferred from the passage that only children's parents should ___________.
A. found a support group for their only children
B. do volunteer work to help their only children
C. let their only children make all the decisions alone
D. set good examples for their only children
68. Emerson decided to move his elderly mother to a new house because he ___________.
A. is the only one who cares about her       B. doesn't want to leave her alone
C. wants to share the responsibility with her  D. is worried about her safety
69. It is quite usual now for a working mother to ____________.
A. spend all her time and money on her only child
B. be responsible for bringing up her only child
C. have and bring up only one child
D. devote all her energy to her job
70. The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A. only children are ruined and irresponsible
B. only children have to face many challenges
C. most only children want to have brothers and sisters
D. most only children share their responsibility with their parents

I would like to talk to you about space vegetables, and to show you that space vegetables are healthy and good for you.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that have been taken to and brought back from outer space. The seeds are affected by the radiation(辐射) and low gravity(重力) in outer space. When they are brought back to Earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger, healthier and more nutritious than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could give us cancer as a result of their exposure(暴露) to radiation in space. People should not be scared, though, as space vegetables are actually perfectly healthy.
Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully selected. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that the vegetables they grow will be safe to eat. There are no traces(痕迹) of radiation after testing.
Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes. Another popular space vegetable is peppers. Space peppers contain 20 percent more vitamin C than normal peppers.
After genetically modified foods(转基因食品) came onto the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes are put inside potatoes, people allergic(过敏) to nuts might get very sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified foods, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, there are no dangers of eating something unknown.
 Space vegetables are safe,
(1)_______, and good for you to eat.
Measures taken to ensure (确保)  the (2)______ of      space vegetables Before being brought to the outer space, the (3)______ are carefully selected.
